چکیده

802.11 networks are largely adopted, thus the identification of wireless devices becomes a major issue in network security. This study takes place in the scope of a defensive scenario, and can be used to detect Medium Access Control (MAC) address spoofing. We develop an approach to improve the identification of unique devices while keeping existing 802.11 fingerprinting methods. We evaluate our approach on two state-of-the-art methods and successfully improve the identification of identical devices on one method.

Fingerprinting 802.11 Rate Adaptation Algorithms

The effectiveness of rate adaptation algorithms is an important determinant of 802.11 wireless network performance. The diversity of algorithms that has resulted from efforts to improve rate adaptation has introduced a new dimension of variability into 802.11 wireless networks, further complicating the already difficult task of understanding and debugging 802.11 performance. To assist with this...

Algorithmic Strategies for Adapting 802.11 Location Fingerprinting to Environmental Changes

This paper studies novel algorithmic strategies that enable 802.11 location fingerprinting to adapt to environmental changes. A long-standing challenge in location fingerprinting has been that dynamic changes, such as people presence, opening/closing of doors, or changing humidity levels, may influence the 802.11 signal strengths to an extent where a static radio map is rendered useless. To cou...

Multi-user Diversity for IEEE 802.11 Infrastructure Wireless LAN

To realize high data rate wireless communication systems, much attention is being payed to multi-user diversity due to large bandwidth availability. Multi-user diversity based opportunistic scheduling is a modern view communication over fading wireless channels, whereby, unlike rate adaptation based schemes, channel variations are exploited rather than mitigated. This paper proposes a multi-use...

Passive Data Link Layer 802.11 Wireless Device Driver Fingerprinting

Motivated by the proliferation of wireless-enabled devices and the suspect nature of device driver code, we develop a passive fingerprinting technique that identifies the wireless device driver running on an IEEE 802.11 compliant device. This technique is valuable to an attacker wishing to conduct reconnaissance against a potential target so that he may launch a driver-specific exploit. In part...

IEEE 802.11 user fingerprinting and its applications for intrusion detection

Easy associations with wireless access points (APs) give users temporal and quick access to the Internet. It needs only a few seconds to take their machines to hotspots and do a little configuration in order to have Internet access. However, this portability becomes a double-edged sword for ignorant network users. Network protocol analyzers are typically developed for network performance analys...
